QuietOn Sleep Earplugs Review: Can These Earbuds Help You Sleep Better?

QuietOn combines earplugs with active noise canceling to create a new gadget that will block snoring, airplane cabin noises, or hotel hallway sounds. Unlike regular earbuds, these are designed for sleep, so they’re comfortable in a lying-down position.

QuietOn Sleep Earplugs Review:

Price and Where to Buy: At the time of writing, the QuietOn Sleep Earplugs were on sale on QuietOn’s website for $199.

[st_content_ad]How the QuietOn Sleep Earplugs Rate:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. Regular earplugs help mute noise somewhat, but not enough for an uninterrupted night’s sleep. QuietOn’s active noise cancellation significantly blocks environmental sounds (including snoring and construction) to help you sleep. The battery lasts for up to 20 hours, so you can sleep for an alarmingly long time uninterrupted if you so choose. The earplugs have a button that allows you to quickly switch between the silent and hearing modes, which is great for travel—if you need to talk to someone or hear an announcement, just click over to hearing mode to listen and then back to silent to go back to sleep.
  • Portability: 9/10. QuietOn Sleep earplugs are small and lightweight, and come with their own tiny carrying case (that’s also the battery charger). The case charges separately, so you can plug it in while you sleep and then wirelessly charge the earplugs in the case while you travel.
  • Comfort: 8/10. If you’re used to sleeping with traditional earplugs, these will feel very similar. They are cushioned and allow you to sleep on your side without causing any pain or discomfort as a regular earbud might.
  • Style: 10/10. These earplugs look like regular wireless headphones, so you won’t seem out of place wearing them on the plane.

Final Verdict: Losing sleep over noises? Block them out and regain your rest with the QuietOn Sleep Earplugs.

Manta Sleep Mask Review: A 100 Percent Blackout Mask for Light Sleepers

The Manta Sleep’s unique design uses a combination of hollow eye covers and a foam eyemask to create the ultimate sleep mask, one that blocks out 100 percent of light and doesn’t restrict eye movement.

Manta Sleep Mask Review:

Price and Where to Buy: The Manta Sleep Mask is available on Amazon and Manta Sleep’s website for $29.99

[st_content_ad]How The Manta Sleep Mask Rates:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. Unlike regular sleep masks that let in light around the nose and sides, the Manta Sleep Mask blocks out 100 percent of the light, giving you total darkness even if you’re trying to sleep in a brightly lit airport or sunny room.
  • Portability: 8/10. The molded, soft foam, hollow eye covers make the mask slightly less portable than a standard mask, but it’s still lightweight and folds down for easy packing in the included carrying case.
  • Comfort: 10/10. This mask doesn’t put any pressure on your nose or eyes, so your eyes can naturally move in REM sleep. The velour-lined strap is lined all the way around, so that the Velcro won’t catch on your hair or cause any pain.
  • Durability: 9/10. The mask is machine-washable, so you can feel good about putting it on your face, even after you wear it on a plane.

Final Verdict: The Manta Sleep Mask is like having your own blackout curtains wherever you go.

Delsey Turenne Carry-On Review: One Of The World’s Lightest Carry-Ons

Prepare to be surprised when you pick up the Delsey Turenne. Weighing just 4.7 lbs., this carry-on is one of the lightest hardside suitcases on the market. This cleverly-designed bag is perfectly sized to fit almost any airline’s carry-on requirement, and packs in plenty of helpful features.

Delsey Turenne Review:

Price and Where to Buy: At the time of writing, the Delsey Turenne was on sale on Amazon for $203 and on Delsey’s website for $219.

[st_content_ad]How The Delsey Turenne Rates:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. Pack more and still stay under the carry-on weight allowance, thanks to the Delsey Turenne’s incredibly light weight. A built-in TSA-approved combination lock keeps your suitcase secure, and the interior is fully lined to further protect your items. Two zippered dividers help keep you organized, as do the included two packing bags. Unlike most carry-ons, Delsey accounts for the wheels in handles in its sizing (21.75″ x 13.75″ x 9.75″), which means you won’t have to gate check your bag on account of it being too big for the overhead bin.
  • Portability: 10/10. The double spinner wheels roll super smoothly, and prevent the bag from tipping over. The handle retracts effortlessly and is nicely padded for extra rolling comfort.
  • Style: 10/10. The Turenne comes in stylish colors and looks much more expensive than it is (especially if you get it on sale).
  • Durability: 10/10. Despite the lightness, the 100 percent virgin polycarbonate is incredibly strong, and will withstand whatever the baggage handlers to do your suitcase. Plus, the suitcase comes with a 10 year warranty, just in case something goes wrong.

Final Verdict: Take the weight out of your hardside suitcase with the Delsey Turenne.

Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks Review: Fun Footwear for Long Flights

Compression socks are associated with a number of benefits, from the prevention of life-threatening blood clots on long flights to reduced muscle soreness after exercise. Though you can get prescription socks from a doctor—and you probably should if you have a history of blood clots or other medical issues—there are plenty of compression socks commercially available in a fun range of colors and patterns.

I tested Dr. Segal’s Stripe Cotton Teal Energy Socks, which offer 15 – 20 mmHg graduated compression and are available for both men and women. They include an antimicrobial treatment to help reduce odor.

dr segal's striped compression sock.

If you’ve never worn compression socks before, it can be a little tricky to put them on at first. Dr. Segal’s describes a six-step process and even includes a video to help. (I found that it also worked to simply scrunch the sock up enough to get my toes in, then roll up from there.)

Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks Review:

Price and Where to Buy: The socks start at $29.99 on Dr. Segal’s website or at Amazon.

How Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks Rate:

  • Usefulness: 8/10. If you regularly take long flights, these compression socks are a good purchase: They can make your legs more comfortable and possibly even save your life by preventing a dangerous clot. I found the socks to be supportive but not overly tight or uncomfortable, and their blend of cotton, nylon, and Lycra felt well made. Note that the socks are thick and quite warm—which could be good or bad depending on the climate in your destination and whether your body temperature tends to run hot.
  • Value: 8/10. Thirty dollars is a lot for a single pair of socks, but they will last you a long time—especially if you only wear them on a few flights a year.
  • Durability: 8/10. I’ve worn and washed the socks several times, and they’re holding up fine so far. However, they do require a little special care: They’ll last longer if you wash them in cold water on a gentle cycle and let them air dry. Dr. Segal’s cautions against using bleach or fabric softener.
  • Portability: 9/10. They may be taller and thicker than your normal socks, but they’re still pretty easy to pack.
  • Cool Factor: 9/10. Dr. Segal’s compression socks come in tons of colors and patterns, including argyle, stripes, houndstooth, and solids, so it’s easy to find a look that fits your style.

Final Verdict: These colorful, attractive socks are worth a purchase if you regularly fly long-haul.

August Smart Lock Pro Review: Unlock Your Door Hands-Free

The August Smart Lock Pro can unlock your door when you get close, automatically lock it for you when you leave, and let guests in on your behalf. Plus, it installs in less than five minutes.

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock Pro Review:

Price and Where to Buy: At the time of writing, the August Smart Lock Pro was on sale on Amazon for $183.50.

[st_content_ad]How The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock Rates:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. Never carry around keys again—The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock will unlock your door when it senses your arrival, automatically lock it for you when you leave, let guests in, and show you who has come in and left your house. It attaches to the existing deadbolt on your door, and you can still use your keys if you ever need to. The smart lock can even be paired with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri.
  • Durability: 10/10. The lock is well-made and will withstand any kind of weather, plus it comes with a one-year warranty.
  • Security: 10/10. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock will automatically lock your door when you leave, and it will also show you in the app if your door is unlocked or locked. You can use the app to remotely let in guests or delivery people, and restrict access to a single occurrence or multiple use. The app uses two-factor authentication and two-layer encryption for extra security, and you can disable the app and any virtual keys instantly if you lose your phone.
  • Style: 9/10. The lock is slightly bulky, but will make your house look high-tech.

Final Verdict: Stop worrying about losing your keys or forgetting to lock the door before you leave for vacation and get the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.

Allbirds, the popular brand known for its comfortable and stylish merino wool shoes, has finally launched its take on the ballet flat—the Tree Breezers. Made from an eco-friendly eucalyptus tree fiber blend material, these flats are the perfect travel shoe.

Allbirds Tree Breezers Review:

Price and Where to Buy: The Tree Breezers are available on Allbirds’ website for $95.

[st_content_ad]How the Allbirds Tree Breezers Rate:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. The Tree Breezers look like a stylish, classic ballet flat, but are made from a eucalyptus tree fiber material that keeps the shoes breathable and your feet cool. The flats slip on and off easily, and have a knit collar that keeps the shoes snug on your feet as you walk. On the inside, a SweetFoam sole absorbs shock and provides bounce and support, so you can walk far without pain in these. Revelar Workshop Cubepack Set Review: The Next Generation of Packing Cubes Just Hit the Market

A new type of packing cubes just hit the market. Instead of your standard compressionable packing cubes, Revelar Workshop created a set of three packing cubes that do double duty.

[st_related]Download the Ultimate Packing List[/st_related]

Price and where to buy it: $99 on Revelar Workshop’s website (currently on sale for $75) for a set of three: one small-, one medium-, and one large-sized packing cube.

How the Cubepack Set Rates:

  • Usefulness: 10/10. Obviously, anything that does double duty is incredibly useful when it comes to travel, and the Cubepack set is no different. Not only do each of the cubes have their own front and mesh pockets, but they also convert into a fanny pack, sling bag, or backpack.
  • Value: 7/10. $100 for packing cubes is on the expensive side, but when you think about the price of day packs and other packing cube sets on the market, it actually seems reasonable. As someone who likes traveling with different sized bags but typically doesn’t since they take up too much space, I love this solution.
  • Durability: 10/10. These are some of the most well-made packing cubes I’ve come across, and I’ve seen a lot. The outer material is extremely durable nylon and the zippers glide like a dream.
  • Portability: 10/10. Each cube is lightweight and can compress a seemingly endless amount of clothing.
  • Cool Factor: 9/10. Multi-functional packing cubes might just be the coolest new category of travel gear.

Final Verdict: Packing cubes that do double duty? Sign me up. While on the pricier side, I love that I don’t have to pack a day pack or other bags, in addition to my personal item since these packing cubes do the trick.

[st_content_ad]How the AIAIAI TMA-2 HD Headphones Rate:

The TMA-2s are extremely comfortable due to an ultra-soft, trademarked material that pads both the earcups and the headband. These headphones have a high-end cord designed to reduce interference (so you can plug into the entertainment system on a plane or into your phone/computer).
  • Durability: 9/10. These headphones are well made and will stand up to a lot of use. They are part of a modular system, so you can swap out or upgrade individual parts as needed.

Night Memory Foam Travel Pillow Review:

Price and Where to Buy: The travel pillow is available on Night’s website for $80.

[st_content_ad]How the Night Memory Foam Travel Pillow Rates:

  • Usefulness: 8/10. The Night travel pillow is made from a firm memory foam that will support your head in any upright position. The pillow is covered in a smooth, hypoallergenic silk fabric that reduces breakouts and wrinkles, and prevents your hair from snagging or tangling during sleep. The memory foam is formed into an ergonomic design to help support your head, spine, and neck in good alignment.
  • Durability: 9/10. The memory foam is very firm and will stand up to many uses. The pillowcase can be removed and machine-washed for easy cleaning.

11 Ways to Stay Organized While Traveling

Even the most prepared tourist can feel completely off-kilter when staying in new surroundings or dealing with the many unknowns of travel. Thankfully, a bit of preparation and some clever travel organization hacks will keep any trip from devolving into utter chaos. Here are a few on-the-go travel organization tips to keep you sane, no matter where your journeys take you.

Download Itinerary Apps

Tripit app screenshot

The days of juggling printouts of flight info, hotel reservations, rental-car confirmations, schedules, maps, and directions are over. With the help of itinerary apps, you can organize all of your itineraries on your smartphone. The best of the bunch is TripIt. Simply forward confirmation emails to TripIt and it will generate a complete itinerary for you, then customize your itinerary by adding maps, directions, and notes. You can even share your account with others, making group travel a cinch.

[st_related]The 5 Best Trip Planner Apps for Travelers[/st_related]

Use a Packing List Before and During Your Trip

ultimate packing list

You should always make a packing list before you even pull your suitcase out of the closet. (And to get started, download a copy of our Ultimate Packing List.) But what about when you’re on the road? It may be a good idea to print a duplicate copy and pack it in your suitcase. That way, you can check it against your belongings while on the road to ensure you leave no item behind. When you’re repacking at the end of a long vacation, you can check items off as you place them back neatly in your luggage.

Use Packing Cubes

eBags classic packing cubes for travel

A trusted workhorse in organizing your travel bag is packing cube sets. I’ve used durable eBags packing cubes for years to separate clothes by type and to keep my toiletries and accessories separate. Packing cubes are the easiest way to turn your suitcase into a compartmentalized closet, and make unpacking at your destination incredibly simple.

[st_related]The Best Packing Cubes Ever[/st_related]

Organize Your Technology

Cocoon cpg10bk grid-it! accessory organizer

Carry a lot of technology with you on your travels? Then you know how easily cords get tangled and gadgets get lost. Cocoon makes several accessory organizers that feature an organization system with rubberized elastic bands to hold your chargers, headphones, backup storage, and other accessories in place (some even come with pockets for your tablet and computer). These flat, lightweight cases fit easily into carry-on bags and are invaluable on the road.

Carry a Well-Organized Wallet, Satchel, or Money Belt

Bellroy leather travel wallet cocoa

A high-quality, well-organized wallet is indispensable for travel: This one has plenty of pockets for clever storage, but isn’t too bulky to pack and stick into your pocket or handbag. Eagle Creek has a number of smart options with sufficient organization for your passport and boarding passes, while Bellroy’s leather travel wallet earns praise for its clever, sleek design and included mini travel pen.

You can also get a designated small satchel or discreet money belt to use on your travels—this will force you to prioritize what you need and make you less susceptible to theft. I’m a fan of small cross-body satchels with secure zippers like Travelon’s Anti-Theft Crossbody. Secret pouches that can go under your clothes or a coat also work well, like Zero Grid’s Neck Wallet, if you want something stealthy and light.

[st_related]17 Essential Passport Wallets and Holders for Travelers[/st_related]

Hang Your Toiletries

hanging toiletry bag

Anyone with a hefty toiletries bag knows how hard it is to keep all those tiny travel items organized and accessible. The solution is a hanging version—you can hang it open at the hotel to see all your toiletries at once, and still zip it up and stash it away when you need to. 42 Travel’s unisex toiletry kit has high-density, water-resistant fabric and mesh pockets that let you see inside its biggest compartments while it’s hanging.

Organize Your Seatback

AUTOARK standard car seat back organizer,multi-pocket travel storage bag

Family road trips are a blast until you realize you need something you packed away in the trunk. Keeping everything you’ll need in sight is simple with a seatback organizer. Autoark’s insulated multi-pocket version has a main bag that’s big enough to fit drinks and snacks inside, plus outer compartments for all your smaller necessities.

[st_related]10 Road Trip Essentials: How to Stay Safe, Sane, and on Track[/st_related]

Organize Your Undies

underwear pouch organizer

The only way to pack underwear is to awkwardly attempt to fold it, fail, ball it up, and stuff it in the corner of your suitcase, right? Wrong. Underwear bags are a life-changing travel accessory, especially for women packing bras and other intimates that can get lost or damaged in a stuffed suitcase. Mochithings’ Underwear Pouch v2 has a zippered section perfect for stacking bras or other undergarments, plus small top-flap compartments and a detachable zippered pouch. All your tiniest necessities will be at your fingertips when you need them, and not buried or tumbling out when you open your bag.

Use Plastic Bags

Travelon packing pouches,

Simple plastic baggies come in handy for many packing situations—dirty clothes, wet items, carry-on liquids, jewelry, etc. Whether you grab a handful of Ziploc kitchen baggies or invest in reusable multi-sized ones like Travelon Packing Pouches, keeping some stashed in your suitcase is one of the easiest travel organization tips on this list.

[st_related]12 Clever Ways to Use Plastic Bags When You Travel[/st_related]

Unpack Immediately

Living out of a suitcase can lead to a disorganized vacation. When you arrive at your destination, always unpack immediately, even if your trip is a short one. Fold clothing and place it into dresser drawers, hang up any garment that may wrinkle, arrange your shoes in the closet, and unpack your toiletries in the bathroom rather than leaving them in their quart-sized plastic baggie. You’ll feel more relaxed and at ease, and you won’t be pulling clothing out of a rumpled pile on the floor.

Recreate Your Home Environment

There’s something about a hotel room that makes even the neatest person messy (and turns the naturally disorganized into a hot travel mess). One thing I always do when staying in a hotel is to make my surroundings as home-like as possible.

At home, I keep my keys and wallet on a table near my door, so I recreate that in my hotel room by placing a bowl or box near the door for my purse, keys, wallet, lip balm, etc. That way, I never forget to grab something essential as I’m heading out for the day. When possible, I unpack my clothing into the same dresser-drawer configuration that I use in my own dresser at home, and I arrange my cosmetics and toiletries in a similar fashion in the bathroom. I even charge my iPhone in the same location as I do at home. It sounds a bit type A, but it keeps me organized during hectic trips—and it ensures I never leave anything behind.

What are your best travel organization tips? Share them in the comments.

7 Travel Electronics the Least Tech-Savvy Travelers Will Love

Not all travelers are packing high-tech travel electronics or plugging in every chance they get, but there are plenty of everyday items that travel better when they incorporate some technology. These travel electronics provide low-tech solutions to common travel challenges like staying in touch, easily sourcing potable water, and protecting your personal property while traveling.

These are the best travel electronics, ranging from those with charge-free simplicity to low-tech gadgets that require little to no tinkering.

RFID-Blocking Wallet or Purse

 rfid-blocking-wallets

Safeguard yourself from electronic pickpockets looking to lift personal data from chips inserted in passports, IDs, and credit cards. Simply put those important documents in RFID-blocking wallets like this spacious women’s leather clutch or this men’s passport wallet, which makes room for cash and cards, too.

Water-Filtering Bottle

 LifeStraw go water filter bottle

A low-tech solution to sourcing clean, potable water, a filtration water bottle means you can hydrate at just about any water source. The LifeStraw Water-Filtering Bottle claims to filter out 99.9 percent of water-borne bacteria, making even the grossest water drinkable. That includes water from questionable sources such as ponds and lakes when you’re camping, and tap water in destinations where you’d normally not drink from the faucet.

[st_related]12 Things You Should Never Pack[/st_related]

Universal Power Adapter

 BESTEK universal travel adapter 220v

It’s time to upgrade your universal power adapter. Today’s adapters simultaneously perform prong-adapting and power-converting duties, so your gadgets don’t get fried in nations with different voltages. Amazon’s most popular power adapter/converter is the Bestek Universal Power Adapter, which can charge seven items at once.

Charging Phone Case

Lonlif battery case for iphone

You can map your destination, stay in touch with everyone, and keep your entertainment accessible while traveling—but you can only do that if your phone has battery life. The best way to keep your phone charged without having to carry all those cables is by popping your phone in a charging phone case. Make sure to get a charging phone case that fits your particular phone’s model, and one that’s waterproof, to boot.
